Why hydroponics

What makes a hydroponic kit worth buying

Growing in nutrient solution instead of soil removes most of the things that make gardening hard, and all of the things that make it seasonal.

No yard needed

A bench, a balcony or a spare corner is enough. The eleven-cup kit is the size of a storage tub; the 108-pot system is a metre and a bit across.

No soil, no weeding

Roots sit in oxygenated nutrient solution. There is nothing to dig, nothing to weed and no watering schedule to keep to.

Growing all year

Indoors with a grow light, the season stops mattering. That is the whole argument for growing this way in a climate with a real winter.

Built for beginners

Every kit arrives with what it needs and instructions written for someone who has never done this. No experience required.

Less water, not more

A closed system recirculates its solution rather than letting it drain away, which is why hydroponics uses less water than the same plants in soil.

Delivered across Australia

Free on orders over $100, otherwise a flat $30.00. Packed in 24 to 48 hours, then 5 to 7 days on the road.

Buying a hydroponic system online

Which system to start with

Deep water culture is the most forgiving: the roots sit in oxygenated solution and the system keeps working even if the power blips. NFT circulates a thin film of solution past the roots and scales further, which is why the 36 and 108 pot kits are nutrient film. If this is a first attempt, start with deep water culture; if you already know you want volume, start with NFT.

How much space it really takes

The eleven-cup kit is a tub. The 36-pot NFT frame is 98 by 108 centimetres and 52 tall. The 108-pot system is 140 by 96 and 50 tall. A grow tent adds a controlled space around any of them, 1.2 or 1.5 metres square and two metres high.

Light is usually the missing piece

Indoors, light is what decides whether the plants grow or just survive. A clip-on lamp with a three, nine or twelve hour timer suits a single planter; the aluminium light strips at 18 watts suit a full frame. Without enough light the healthiest kit in the world produces very little.

Starting seeds properly

Most failures happen before the plant reaches the system. Rockwool cubes hold moisture without waterlogging, a heat mat lifts the tray ten to twenty degrees above the room, and a vented propagation tray lets you set humidity. Those three between them are the difference between germination and a tray of nothing.

What we will not tell you

Hydroponic produce cannot be certified organic in Australia, because the national standard requires production in soil. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a word rather than a plant. What growing this way does give you is food you picked yourself, indoors, without pesticides and without waiting for the season.

Fresh food, grown at home.

Pick the system that fits your space. If you are not sure which one that is, ask us and we will tell you.
